Process
Working Up the Image
I start with washes of color and then see how the shapes and figures reveal themselves. Then I work into them discovering characters from myth and legend, animals and strange beings of my creation. There are no rules. I want people to travel into my paintings and explore.
I do some reference work and my paintings reflect my favorite infuences to greater or lesser degrees: Marc Chagall, Hundertwasser, Paul Klee, Edvard Munch. and the great illustrators of fairy tales and folklore like Jon Bauer and Arthur Rackham.
As Paul Klee said: “Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see.”
